I love bike photography and I know a lot of you do too. A while back I set up a group on flickr called PedalZine where anyone can submit their best cycling photos. Every month I’ll be choosing four of my favorite photos from the group and showing them off here… if you like them, please click the images and leave a comment on the artist’s flickr page!
The creative geniuses at Howcast have added yet another great feature designed to help people share these videos easily. Now, instead of embedding just one of the videos on your site, you can embed a customized playlist of videos like the one seen below. So far I’ve only made one playlist, but as we get more tutorials done I’ll be making several more for different topic themes.
Click on the email icon above to get the embed code.
Lately I’ve been overwhelmed with email questions from visitors. In an effort to save time so that I can continue producing videos, I’ve now set up forums where you can register and ask questions. That way everyone can contribute and benefit from the answers in a community-style format. Once registered you can add a profile icon and website link (which will show up on all of your posts), subscribe to topics, and send other members private messages… enjoy!
As you may know, we have an affiliate account with JensonUSA, one of the biggest and most trusted online bicycle retailers. Jared Saunders just released a press release reporting a 30% increase in sales from last year, at a time when so many other industry sectors are failing. This is awesome news… I can’t wait to see the bicycle industry out-sell the automobile industry!
With 36 tutorials online I’m feeling the need to let loose and go on a short vacation. I’m going to check out the Pemberton Festival this week and do some photography for my buddy Ronatron. I’ll be back on Aug 4th and the next tutorial will be posted around Aug 8th ![]()
I was blown away yesterday when Sree Sreenivasan contacted me to let me know he’d be covering BicycleTutor.com on the 5:20 evening news. You can watch the original video on NBC, and be sure to check out Sree’s technology page while you’re there… thanks Sree!
The list of requests is growing large, and I don’t have a lot of the components we need. It would be great to find sponsors that are willing to exchange bicycles, parts and tools for brand exposure on BicycleTutor.com. For example, if your local shop donated a BMX bike or a folding bike, I would mention them in every video I used it in, and also link to them in the text portion of the tutorial. This site is now getting 10-20,000 pageviews a day, so the advertising potential for them would be well worth it. If you know anyone who can help us or you have some advice, please contact me. You can get an idea of the kind of thing we are looking for by checking the requests that are pending parts or tools.
Thank you ![]()
I haven’t got any 3-speed tutorials done yet, but there have been a lot of requests. I thought I’d share some of Vin Vullo’s great videos in the meantime. Vin has been buying and selling vintage bicycles since the 1960s. He’s got an excellent resource for vintage bicycles over at OldRoads.com. He’s also made 16 videos introducing all aspects of 3-speed bicycles, from sizing to accessories. Check out this playlist of his vintage 3-speed videos on YouTube!
Fábio Pereira has kindly volunteered to add Portuguese Subtitles to some of the videos. Today he sent in the first video, Como Revisar sua Bicicleta (How To Tune Up Your Bike). You’ll find a link to the subtitle page below the English Version. Thanks Fábio!
In response to all of your requests for a DVD version of the tutorials, I’ve put together Volume One of what will become a series of DVDs. This first volume contains the first 25 video tutorials from the site. All future volumes will have 25 videos each.
Since we launched the site, I’ve been keeping track of all your requests using an excel spreadsheet. Some tutorials get requested a lot, so I’ve been looking for a way to display all of the requests on the site in a way that allows you to vote and add to the discussion. It’s basically another website within Bicycle Tutor that has its own set of categories, comments, RSS feeds, and tags. Each request has a rating, user requests, status updates, a call for parts and tools, related web resources, related tutorials, and comments. When a request is completed, you will be notified by email, the ratings will be removed, and there will be a link to watch the video!

Thanks for submitting all of the comments, questions and requests that add so much value to the site. Thanks for sharing this site with your friends and on blogs, forums and websites. Thanks for donating funds to keep the site going, either with advertising, donations, or by purchasing downloads, and thanks for ordering bike parts and tools from JensonUSA!
THANK YOU EVERYONE FOR ALL YOUR HELP!
Howcast - All of the videos on this site are now hosted exclusively by Howcast. I am simply blown away by the video quality and the many tools they provide that enhance the viewers learning experience. The support team is fast, helpful and friendly… Thanks!
Hands down, Howcast is the best how-to video site on the web!
Jenson USA - Jared from Jenson USA invited me to join their affiliate program. This means a small commission from all bike parts/tools sold through the site now goes toward funding the site! I did some background research on their company and found that they’ve been around for years, and they have a solid reputation for quality service. They’ve even made us a custom banner and product landing page just for us!
An excellent way to monetize the site in a useful way, thanks Jared!
Sheldon Brown - Sheldon was a legendary cycling enthusiast and all-around bicycle guru. His comprehensive website, email responses, and forum posts have helped millions around the world learn the technical side of bicycles. Before his passing, he was kind enough to thoroughly review the first tutorials on this site. His insights and constructive criticism have helped so much. He will be missed.
Rest in peace Sheldon Brown, thanks for all of your help!
Small Potato - I found this free WordPress theme called Jello Wala Mello, and I just had to use it on this site. I like the way it looks and functions… the code is smart and it was very simple to set up and customize. Small Potato is a genius.
All I had to do was change the colours… thanks SP!
WordPress - I’m using WordPress open-source blog software to generate all of the posts, pages, categories, tags, etc that you see on the site. This site just wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of the thousands of volunteers who are constantly developing and improving the software.
If you’re setting up a new blog, I highly recommend using WordPress!
This section of the site for posting important site updates, share useful cycling information, and discussing other bicycle related stuff without interfering with the tutorials. All posts in this section are separate from the main site, feed and email notifications.
